(ANSA) - Venice, June 25 - Police on Friday seized 11 million glass objects made in China but being sold as the lagoon city's famed Murano glass.
The objects were being sold by three Venetian companies, two based on the island of Murano and the third in nearby Jesolo, whose owners and managers have been arrested.
The 11 million glass pieces included candleholders, wine and drinking glasses, masks, necklaces, charms, crucifixes and other accessories.
The three companies allegedly replaced 'made in China' stickers on the objects with others reading 'Murano glass' and sold them at reduced prices, as much as 50% below those for the authentic Venetian glass.
Investigators said the companies based on Murano had glass furnaces and also made authentic products, which made it difficult to identify the fraud.
The Jesolo-based company has a well-known chain of shops in central Venice which acquired the Chinese glass from the two companies on Murano.
